ORGL 610 - Communication and leadership ethics
My Course experience
Communicaton and Leadership Ethics turned my focus in leadership studies into practical analysis of ethical situations occurring in my own organization. The study of ethics readings paired with the impactful “Countering Hate” interactive case study on hate crimes really brought a situational awareness for me as a leader. As my third class in the program it was a catalyst to view what I was learning through a lens of the organizational life happening around me, seeing the way I could craft responses as a leader that would help the organization grow.
Course Takeaways
-
Dialogic Communication
The idea of dialogic communication was formative for me. I often have found myself going into dialogue not really paying attention to or honestly caring what the other has to say. I often was just talking to get my point across. The study of dialogic communication made me really assess if my point of communication was to express my own ideas or to participate in a collaborative experience. Am I truly wanting to learn and grow when in conversation with someone else? I have had to ask myself that question several times and it has lead me to immense growth in my listening and communication.

The Potter Box
The Potter Box, developed by Ralph Potter, is a way of locating the places most misunderstandings occur. The four parts of The Potter Box are Definition, Values, Principles, & Loyalties. By using this diagram to assess a situation, we can begin to see where misunderstandings and discrepancies lie.

Non-violence in Everyday Life
In Countering Hate, I got to be immersed in the stories of how citizens choose to combat hate in their communities with non-violent action. This was especially impactful because most of the stories centered around communities that are very close to where I live. I have always been someone who believed in non-violence but to see practical examples was very informative.
