ORGL 530 - Servant Leadership

My Course experience

This course was my initial introduction into the world of Greenleaf. As I look back over my time in the program the writings of Greenleaf and the concepts of Servant Leadership have been the most life changing for me. Learning the four stages of Servant Leadership and seeing those portrayed through different content examples was empowering to me as a leader.

Course Takeaways

  • Robert K. Greenleaf

This course was my first introduction to Robert Greenleaf and his writings on Servant Leadership. Getting to take this course from Larry Spears, who is an expert on Greenleaf, was a perfect way to begin my journey into the concentration of Servant Leadership.

  • Servant-Leader in training

The concept that a servant-leader is always in training was brought forth by John Horsman in his book Servant-Leaders in Training. I found this idea really challenging to my held thoughts and belief of leadership at the time. In starting the program I had a thought of an end arrival point in mind. That I would some how reach a pinnacle. Little did I know that this program was just a runaway into a lifelong pursuit of learning and growing as a servant-leader.

  • The 10 Practices of Servant Leaders

This is the concept that my whole journey of servant leadership through this program has been based on. Learning and growing in those 10 practices as a leader. Those ten practices are Listening, Healing, Empathy, Awareness, Persuasion, Conceptualization, Foresight, Stewardship, Commitment to the growth of people, and Building Community.

Assignment Prompt: Choose a character from one of the three films in this course to critique from the perspective of servant-leadership. For this assignment apply criteria from either Hall’s adult development model (Horsman’s presentation), or Torbert & Fisher’s developmental model of work and leadership (introduced in Thompson’s book). Identify servant-leader criteria, apply it to a case character and provide supportive examples. How does the presence or absence of servant-leadership affect the drama of human life as illustrated in the "case study" that is the film's story? In your conclusion/summary comments refer to the Servant-leader Dispositions Capacities and Skills form and relate what you learned about Servant-leadership from completing this exercise (module) that might be beneficial to you in your future (1-3 statements).
